Larry Young Obituary, Death – Larry Gene Young was a man whose life was defined by his unchanging love for his family, his community, and the land he cultivated as a farmer. He was born on July 7, 1951 in Red Oak, Iowa. His life continued to be defined by these things. On Wednesday, March 20, 2024, Larry moved into eternal rest in a calm and tranquil manner when he was engaged in farming, which was his greatest passion. The years that Larry spent growing up were spent in the close-knit town of Essex, where he established enduring relationships and made memories that he will always remember.
He received his diploma from Essex High School in 1969, so setting the groundwork for a life that would be characterized by commitment and devotion to other people. After completing his high school education, Larry went on to pursue higher education. He initially enrolled at Iowa Western Community College, and then he transferred to Wayne State College, where he began his studies in Physical Education.
A Union of Love
The wedding took place in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah on December 17, 1977, when Larry and Kelly Hansen, the woman he had loved his entire life, exchanged their vows. During the course of their marriage, they were graced with the birth of three cherished sons: Toby, Andy, and T.J. The three of them worked together to construct a life that was centered on family, faith, and hard labor. Although Larry had several different occupations throughout his life, he never stopped having his heart on the farm.
After considering a number of different career options, such as managing positions and working for businesses such as Pizza Hut and Eaton Manufacturing, Larry made the decision in 1976 to pursue farming on a full-time basis. This decision offered him a great deal of happiness and satisfaction. Larry maintained a strong investment in the land that he cherished right up until the moment of his untimely death.
A Pillar of the Community
Larry’s kind and outgoing manner won over the hearts of everyone who knew him throughout the years. In addition to serving as the Past President of the Essex Optimist Club, he devoted over 22 years of his life to working as a member of the school board for the Essex Community Schools, where he was elected President three times. He was extremely committed in his community. The fact that he was a devout member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah is evidence that his faith was also a guiding influence in his life.
Larry valued the time he got to spend with his family, in addition to the time he spent volunteering in the community. The straightforward pleasures of life brought Larry a great deal of happiness, whether he was participating in the activities of his sons or rooting for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Playing cards, taking part in men’s softball leagues, and most importantly, spending quality time with his cherished family were all activities that he enjoyed doing with great enthusiasm.
Remembering Larry’s Legacy
The deaths of Larry’s parents, Robert and Marice Young, as well as his brother Steve Young and his mother-in-law, Maureen Hansen, came before his own. His wife of 46 years, Kelly, his sons Tobias, Andrew, and T.J., his grandchildren, and a myriad of friends and loved ones will forever appreciate the legacy of love and commitment that he leaves behind. He leaves behind a legacy that will be long cherished. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent in Larry’s name to either the Shenandoah Community Food Pantry or St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah. This is a fitting way to honor Larry’s dedication to both his faith and his community.

As we contemplate the life of Larry Gene Young, we are continually reminded of the significant influence that a single individual can have on the lives of other people.
